Single Reviews: Eels - Spectacular Girl

This is the latest single from the brainchild of Mark Oliver Everett. For those of you that have not heard Eels before, they are a quirk/pop/rock band made up of one consistent member: E. This single is the second track to be released from the upcoming album: Tomorrow Morning.
"Spectacular Girl", is a slight return to form for E, although it does not improve majorly upon Hombre Lobo. All the usual suspects are here: the "quirky toy piano", the irregular drumbeat and a "pleasant" chorus. These aspects aren't necessarily bad: they're present in some of E's best loved and most well known songs, however there's something in the mix that doesn't quite fit, and this makes the song as a whole sound off balance. The "irregular drum beat" thuds, instead of floats and the melody in the chorus sounds like any other eels song pre-2005. The song is listenable, it just isn't very inspiring to listen to....
